History of Christ Family Academy:

Christ Family Academy was founded by Irene Martei in September 2002 and is located in Teshie, Accra, Ghana. The school was initially comprised of two instructors and five students. Christ Family Academy was a welcome addition to the community, as it provided structured education for students who were unable to afford other schools in the area. In 2002, Christ Family Academy student fees were $2 per month, which attracted many students and quickly increased enrollment.

There are currently over 200 students enrolled at the school, and it employs ten instructors and two attendants. Currently, school fees are approximately $100 per student each year.

Many of the families of students at Christ Family Academy face a variety of challenges that make it difficult for them to pay the required school fees and purchase necessary school supplies. There are many students who have been allowed to attend classes without paying their fees, but this has caused extreme financial strain on the school. An estimated 90% of students are unable to meet their full financial obligations. The management of Christ Family Academy is committed to serving the needs of the community and have decided not to turn students away because of their inability to pay fees. The result is an over-enrolled school without the financial means to pay instructors and provide adequate facilities for students.

Christ Family Academy plans to construct a new building to accommodate more children and they hope to purchase a school bus to assist students who come from great distances to attend. The current toilet facilities are inadequate for the number of students, so a modern toilet facility will be an important addition to the school. Any donations to assist in the expansion and improvement of Christ Family Academy are greatly appreciated.

Christ Family Academy Sponsorship Program:

In May 2007, Nii Armah Sowah visited Christ Family Academy with several individuals as part of Ghana: A Cross-Cultural Exchange, a program designed for participants to experience how Ghanaians live on a daily basis, to give context to dance, rhythms, and songs, and to experience the diversity of sub-cultures within the country. The program participants were welcomed by students at Christ Family Academy, who eagerly shared songs and dances. The students greatly impressed their visitors with their strong sense of enthusiasm, respect and responsibility for their school and teachers, and dedication to their education. Students as young as five years old eagerly helped to arrange desks and chairs, assist their visitors, and sweep the school grounds.

Due to the generous donations of many families and individuals in Colorado and other areas of the U.S., the group was able to donate school supplies, soccer balls, and a laptop computer, while also providing Christ Family Academy with a financial contribution to help with much-needed renovations at the school.

After fully realizing the challenges faced by Christ Family Academy, the group decided to initiate a student sponsorship program and an organization to raise funds for school renovations and improvements. We are currently working on becoming a non-profit organization, with a focus on providing on-going support for students, teachers, and improvement of facilities at Christ Family Academy.
